NEW YORK BY ALAIN: a New Yoker Magazine commission
New York by Alain
In the early 1940s, Alain was commissioned by the New Yorker to create a series of illustrations to would capture the civic, cultural, and ethnic pride that is the essence of New York City.
Alain completed nine works representing the diverse neighborhoods of Manhattan. These nine illustrations, including the collage of actual ethnic newspapers to frame the watercolors, captured the caricature of a city from Columbus Circle to Chinatown, the Battery to Harlem, Little Italy to Washington Square Park. They are quintessential Alain in their draftsmanship, composition, and humor. The exact publication date for these works or the story they most likely illustrated is unknown.
